Looks like the launching of a "Liberty Ship." Probably 1943-45. Seems like an odd selection for this page, since it clearly did not take place in Berkshire County!

If you read the caption under the picture, not easy for these old eyes, it refers to something being named for Williams College. Could this ship be named for Williams College?? Does anyone know??

The descriptive information that accompanies the picture indicates that the ship was launched on May 7, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland and was named "Williams Victory" after Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts.

This is a post-war Victory ship named Williams Victory, after Williams College of Williamstown, Massachusetts. I lived in the North Adams area for a while and before getting out my magnifying glass to read the caption, I racked my brain for a long while trying to determine where on the Hoosic River was that launching pad.

The web site of the United States Merchant Marine, United States Maritime Service, Army Trransport Service, Military Sea Transportation Service and Military Sealift Commmand (www.usmm.org) lists the "Williams Victory" as a World War II troopship.
