I recall back in 1942, I was 16, when it was windy and below zero with nothing but ice around for a period of about 2 weeks and I walked from Gallup St. to Brown St., Gales Shoe Shop, dressed like the person in the picture. One of the workers, Anita Monnette, also about 16, from the union mill area, also walked the same route and she froze both legs, they actually craked open, and we kicked through the ice and brought in snow to the first aid room so the nurse could apply it to her legs so they would not thaw to fast. Anita was fortunate and healed well. There were many freeze casualties during that period, It was the longest and coldest snap I can ever recall.
