Just above from the Elk there was a tall viewing tower,(it's been cut back a couple times since then), and from the tower one could view I believe it was 6 states. Back then the Mohawk Trail was the only way to Eastern parts of Mass. etc. I also recall when the summer traffic lines seemed to be never ending. Then came the Mass. Turnpike. Enough said.
