season. Posted: 09/11/2001 Can you name the location? Definitely The Hairpin Turn on Rt. 2, but I've never seen it THAT busy!Comments... Judging by all the big American cars, I'd put it somewhere in the 50's. It could possibly be Fall Foliage or some other big event. It just doesn't look like everyday traffic. HAIRPIN TURNComments... MOST OF THE CARS ARE LATE 40's. Posted: 09/11/2001 What was the Season? fallCan you name the location? The infamous "Hairpin" turn. Comments... I would guess that this was either the late 40's or early 50's during the Fall Foliage season. I can remember making that same trip up the trail with my Mom, Dad & sisters and seeing the policeman directing traffic. Posted: 09/12/2001 What was the Season? fallCan you name the location? This pic was taken when Route 2 went down Eagle St., down Main St., and up over the "hill" past where Subway is now, to West Main St.
Another thought. This pic was taken from near the top of the Golden Eagle Gift Shop, before the ledge was dug out and the building moved out of the way of tractor-trailors coming down the mouintain with no brakes, and using it for a target, rather than going over the edge to an almost certain death. (Note the "flimsy" guardrails)! Rusty. Posted: 03/03/2003 What was the Season? summerCan you name the location? Mohawk trail Comments... as i remember that flag pole is in front of the gift shop before they moved it in the mountain cause of all the cars and trucks crashing through it.
my guess would be maybe the openning of the gift shop

I worked att the Sterling Station on Union St. across from the old firehouse and recall continuous lines of traffic on weekends and holidays. Rt 2 was always busy back then until the Mass. Pike opened and trucking took over major transportation. The NY throughway and all other major routes that opened after the Eisenhower administration highway development era . The Mohawk Trail was loaded with towers, giftshops, restaurants etc.It died in the 50's and 60's when other major routes opened.
