Can you name any of the people?
Al Romano

Can you name the location?
Armory

Comments...
Al has not been given credit for the great amount of skill, effort and dedication that he gave to the sport of boxing and helped put North Adams on the map. I know Al, I have watched him box. He truly was a remarkable athlete for the level of managment and training that was given to him by the so called professionals. He really trained himself. He had no qualified sparring partners. Kudos to Al Romano. Jack, of North Adams

Ouchhhhh!! Looks to me that all of Al's "opponents" do not take up residence inside the ring. To the real fan, it's a shot of the "Pride of the Berkshires", "skillfully" slipping a good straight left...

Like Randy's picture of the snow at the Florida, Mass., sign each year ... a picture of Al getting tagged was one of his classics. There were times when he needed a fast film to catch the action.

These are the correct names and dates as I read them from the picture in my scrapbook. I'm Al Stalker. I won the judge's cards 9-3.

If I recall this fight properly the guy in white trunks was Dit "the Dit" Ditmar. The Dit was a classic tough cagey veteran. As a fan of Al the first six or seven rounds looked like a war. Each got as good as they gave. Indeed it was looking bleak for Al. But in the seventh or eighth round, Al drop the guy like a bad habit. The Dit was on the mat for unconcious for at least 10 minuets after the fight was over. Word was that Al broke his jaw. Alot of fun has been made of Al Romano, but the fact is he did hold the New England Welterweight Championship and had a chance to win the North American Welterweight Championship. Not too shabby for a division which pound for pound is some of the most exciting and competitive boxing known to man. Thanks for the memories Al.
